CDS Myths – There aren’t alternative services!

Mandy Evans of Opportunity Housing Trust is helping us to build a shared Myth-buster for Citizen Directed Support. This will help us to work together to create reliable answers to the questions people are asking about Citizen Directed Support in Wales.

This is the first in a series of posts about Myths where Alliance members offer an answer to questions that people have asked about Citizen Directed Support in Wales.

The Question – There aren’t alternative services!

Luke Conlon of Community Choice offers us this answer

  • Yes, at the moment there is a limited choice in the range of community supports and services available to citizens. In particular the high levels of demand and the pressures placed upon Stautory Agencies to deliver it all. However with the advent of Citizen Directed Support we all have the responsibility (Citizens, their supporters, Statutory Agencies,Voluntary and Private sector) to work together to develop a wider range of Community supports based upon need and aspirations. For example enabling Families and Citizens to form alliances and develop their own supports.

Please leave us a comment, if you want to add anything to Lukes answer, or offer a different answer, or offer another question.

  1. Support Request:(re developing Alternative Services)

Seeking to develop a community and citizen run Micro Bakery enterprise.in Pembrokeshire.
I have developed a few training modules around Baking Bread and have trialed them in 2 Day Centres in the County. I would like to take this initiative into the community and link up with 3 rd sector Support Providers to identify a group of men willing to come together on a regular basis to learn about the art of making bread. This will take place in Newport Memorial Hall at weekends or in the evening.
After the initial sessions the aim would be to
    - invite the community to community baking events where we will share our skills and also make plenty of bread together. this will promote inclusion and demonstrate that we all have something to share.
    - Develop a plan to open a micro bakery, this is an initiative that will make up to 50 loaves on 2 days of the week and sell to the local community.

Any support providerts in Pembrokeshire, can you assist? Get in touch
